I have been riding a bicycle for over 20 years. In the past 5, I have fallen only twice. Once was due to snow. Both times were low speed. I’ve hurt myself worse fixing computers (true story).
On Friday night, I was on my way home around 10pm. I was riding in the bike lane, being a respectful bicyclist on a shared road. A car that was at a stand-still in traffic decided to make a sharp right turn to snag a parking spot. He did this at the same moment I was about to pass him, crushing my front tire and sending me sprawling to the street almost ten feet in front of his car. I hit the ground pretty hard.
Lucky for me, Friday was the first day I have ever worn a bicycle helmet. I just received it in the mail on Thursday. I’m fine. I walked away. Edgar (the driver) paid for my new wheel. Aside from some scrapes and bruises, we’re all back to normal.
Bike helmets are not that fun to wear. I sweat a lot, I miss wearing my messenger hat. I look like I’m on the set of Space Balls with it on. But, after a crash, who cares? Paying attention, behind defensive, it only goes so far.
If you ride, please wear your helmet. If not for yourself, for me. Or your mom. Or your dog who will miss you if you get hurt.
With love,
Mark
